이스라엘 사람들은 베냐민 사람에게 딸을 주지 않기로 했던 서원으로 인해 대성통곡합니다. 그 결과로 이스라엘의 한 지파가 사라지게 되었기 때문입니다. 이에 그들은 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 총회에 나오지 않았던 야베스 길르앗을 진멸하고, 처녀 사백 인을 데려옵니다.
[통곡하는 이스라엘]
1 이스라엘 사람들이 미스바에서 맹세하여 이르기를 우리 중에 누구든지 딸을 베냐민 사람에게 아내로 주지 아니하리라 하였더라
1 The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: "Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite."
2 백성이 벧엘에 이르러 거기서 저녁까지 하나님 앞에 앉아서 대성통곡하여
3 가로되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 오늘날 이스라엘 중에 어찌하여 한 지파가 이즈러졌나이까 하더니
4 이튿날에 백성이 일찍이 일어나서 거기 한 단을 쌓고 번제와 화목제를 드렸더라
2 The people went to Bethel, where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly.
3 "O LORD, the God of Israel," they cried, "why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?"
4 Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.
5 이스라엘 자손이 가로되 이스라엘 온 지파 중에 총회와 함께하여 여호와 앞에 올라오지 아니한 자가 누구뇨 하니 이는 그들이 크게 맹세하기를 미스바에 와서 여호와 앞에 이르지 아니하는 자는 반드시 죽일 것이라 하였음이라
5 Then the Israelites asked, "Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the LORD?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah should certainly be put to death.
6 이스라엘 자손이 그 형제 베냐민을 위하여 뉘우쳐 가로되 오늘날 이스라엘 중에 한 지파가 끊쳤도다
7 그 남은 자들에게 우리가 어떻게 하면 아내를 얻게 하리요 우리가 전에 여호와로 맹세하여 우리 딸을 그들의 아내로 주지 아니하리라 하였도다
6 Now the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites. "Today one tribe is cut off from Israel," they said.
7 "How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
[또 다른 전쟁]
8 또 가로되 이스라엘 지파 중 미스바에 올라와서 여호와께 이르지 아니한 자가 누구뇨 하고 본즉 야베스 길르앗에서는 한 사람도 진에 이르러 총회에 참예치 아니하였으니
9 백성을 계수할 때에 야베스 길르앗 거민이 하나도 거기 없음을 보았음이라
8 Then they asked, "Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah?" They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
9 For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.
10 회중이 큰 용사 일만 이천을 그리로 보내며 그들에게 명하여 가로되 가서 야베스 길르앗 거민과 및 부녀와 어린아이를 칼날로 치라
11 너희의 행할 일은 모든 남자와 남자와 잔 여자를 진멸할 것이니라 하였더니
12 그들이 야베스 길르앗 거민 중에서 젊은 처녀 사백 인을 얻었으니 이는 아직 남자와 자지 아니하여서 남자를 알지 못하는 자라 그들이 실로 진으로 끌어 오니라 이는 가나안 땅이더라
10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. 11 "This is what you are to do," they said. "Kill every male and every woman who is not a virgin." 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan.
[묵상 도우미]
이즈러졌나이까(3절) ‘이즈러지다’(이지러지다)는 어떤 것의 한 부분이 떨어져 없어진다는 뜻으로, 이스라엘의 12지파 중 한 지파인 베냐민 지파가 없어지게 되었다는 말이다.
